CT vs. MRI

Why CT may be the smarter choice for full body screening

CT scans can detect early signs of heart disease and lung cancer — the #1 and #2 causes of death in the US. MRI cannot. Here's what makes our CT scan different:

Faster — Under 5 Minutes

CT scans complete in under 5 minutes. MRI scans take 60–90 minutes and require body coils that hold heat — causing many patients to overheat.

More Comfortable

Open-ring design — no narrow tube, no claustrophobia. No equipment attached to your body, no loud noise (MRI reaches 100 dB).

Sees the Heart & Lungs

CT can clearly image the heart and detect coronary artery calcium — and is the gold standard for lung nodule detection. MRI struggles with both.

High-Resolution Full Body Imaging

Crystal-clear cross-sectional images of bones, blood vessels, soft tissues, and organs — all in a single scan covering neck to pelvis.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What can I see on a Full Body Scan?

A whole body CT scan can detect many types of findings, including:

  • Cancer — detected at an early stage, when it is most treatable
  • Tumors — benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous)
  • Inflammation — visible as areas of increased brightness on the scan
  • Bone density abnormalities — including early signs of osteoporosis
  • Heart and lung disease — early signs of the two leading causes of death in the US

Our scan can detect up to 500 different conditions across 22+ organ systems.

What's the difference between a CT scan and an MRI?

The main difference is what each technology can see — and how long it takes. CT scans can image the heart and lungs — areas where MRI struggles significantly. Since heart disease is the #1 killer and lung cancer is the top cancer killer, CT is clearly superior for full body early detection.

CT scans take under 5 minutes, require no clothing change, no needles, and no equipment attached to your body. MRI scans take 45–75 minutes, attach body coils that can cause overheating, produce up to 100 decibels of noise, and are very challenging for claustrophobic patients.

What can I expect during the scan?
No injections, no dyes, no fasting, no prep required. You lie down on the table, go in feet first, and the whole process takes less than 5 minutes. The scanner quickly and painlessly images your organs — including your heart, lungs, and all other organs — as well as the vessels around your heart. Multiple helical images are taken looking for the earliest signs of heart disease, cancer, and many other diseases.
Will I get a Heart Calcium Score?

Yes. Our scan measures the calcium buildup in your coronary arteries and determines a specific score:

  • Score 0 — No calcium buildup (lowest risk)
  • Score 1–10 — Minimal buildup
  • Score 11–100 — Mild buildup
  • Score 101–400 — Moderate buildup, elevated risk
  • Score 401+ — Severe buildup, high risk

The calcium score is a powerful predictor of heart attack risk. A higher score means greater risk. Your physician can use this number to guide lifestyle changes and treatment decisions.

Who should get a body scan?

A whole-body CT scan is a valuable tool for a wide range of individuals, including:

  • People with a family history of cancer, heart disease, or serious illness
  • Current or former smokers
  • Individuals with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, or diabetes
  • Middle-aged and older adults (40+)
  • Athletes monitoring musculoskeletal health
  • Anyone planning major lifestyle changes who wants a baseline
  • Anyone seeking comprehensive peace of mind about their health
Is a body scan painful?
No. It is completely non-invasive. There are no needles, no dyes to drink, no fasting, and no medications to take. This test takes less than 5 minutes and most patients describe it as one of the easiest medical tests they've ever had.
Will I get a consultation?
Yes. We have cardiologists, radiologists, and other board-certified MDs on staff who will go over your results and answer any questions you may have after the scan. You'll receive a detailed written report and a physician consultation included with your scan.
Will this affect my insurance or future insurance?
No. Advanced Body Scan does not report your scan results to your insurance company, government health databases, or any outside agencies. Your report of findings is given only to you — and shared with your doctor only at your direction. Because we do not submit to insurance, results do not affect your current or future coverage or rates. Your health decisions remain completely private.
Are all body scan companies the same?
No. Technology, outcomes, and the total number of scans performed have a huge impact on the quality of results. Our continuous improvement in technology over 12+ years and well over 100,000 successfully performed scans make Advanced Body Scan the leader in the industry — and one of the most successful facilities at finding disease and cancer at early stages.
